Howl festival in NYC

It’s an annual event in our neighborhood in honor of Allen Ginsburg’s poem (the poem is here)

Victor plays in it as well.

This is the graphic part, there are many aspects to it

Canvases were spread

along the fences of Tomkins Square park

Maya becomes part of one painting

requiring confessions from the subjects

while I contribute

to another

Van Cortlandt

few nice days – a walk in the woods

I can now wear my 22 years old Star Trek t-shirts

Did I mention it was a nice day?

Boongo running wild in open spaces with her ears  flopping up and down

Manhattanhenge

This was day one of Manhattanhenge

the half sun day.

We went on 14th street

where a crowd was packed in the middle of the road. Someone even had a tripod there. Tomorrow we go on 34th street (or 23rd)

Last entry on this was in 2009 but I updated there the info for this year

Manhattanhenge times for 2011.

Arrive a half-hour earlier than the times given below.

Manhattanhenge: half sun on the grid

Mock-up of the half sun on the grid during Manhattanhenge.

Half Sun on the grid:

Monday, May 30 — 8:17 P.M. EDT

Tuesday, July 12 — 8:25 P.M. EDT

Manhattanhenge: full sun on the grid

Mock-up of the full sun on the grid during Manhattanhenge.

Full Sun on the grid:

Tuesday, May 31 — 8:17 P.M. EDT

Monday, July 11 — 8:25 P.M. EDT

For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.

Governor’s Island

Maya wants her birthday party here (I know, it’s belated)

so we went as soon as it opened to check it out

There’s a 3 minutes ferry ride here

and the views of Manhattan are stunning

There’s mini golf and bikes

but the food is airport priced

So we’ll have to schlep our own.

Mandea, the athlete!

I had to get to this ripe age to finally get my first sports award. It’s not for speed or prowess – but mostly for patience and determination.

I managed to swim over 25 miles (40 km) -40 miles by the end of the season- in a month and a half.

They gave T-shirts for that. And a poolside party – with food and music.

100 degrees, beach again

We left the air conditioning on for Boongo

photo

and went to Brighton to cool off (yeah, that’s a Seinfeld ad behind them – he talks about shrinkage in it)

photo

Not being a holiday, the beach was much emptier
